谭天的个人网站上写的“All works © Tan Tian. This site is neither under construction nor complete”来自他最喜爱的艺术家马丁·克里德（Martin Creed）。正如这句话一样，谭天经常以“既不……也不……”句式的抵抗来表达立场——但到底是“支持”、“反对”或者“弃权”，在一人只能投出一票的规则内，他选择投出三票。

谭天一直以来尝试以系统化的工作方式去开辟一条对艺术机制的批判路径，而全球疫情的来临产生的极速变化，让他转向了对另一维度现况的批判与反思。

如处在由“（广告牌，宣言，笑话）”定义的XYZ坐标轴内，他的每件作品都同时包含了这三种属性，也说明了谭天对形式的追求与态度取向——同时要招摇地吸引注意、要郑重地表达观点、要用幽默模糊意图。2013年的雕塑作品《吐出来就好了 No.5》、文本作品《伊索没办法寓言》（2018）和绘画装置《202230020010/1》（2022），展览中三件作品的材料、结构和内容全然不同，但其中传达出的一个统一信号，指向了对普遍真理的抵抗和替代性视角留存的重要性。

SPURS Gallery将于2022年7月16日在Gallery II举办艺术家谭天在画廊的首次个展“（广告牌，宣言，笑话）”，展览将持续至2022年8月21日。

On Tan Tian’s personal website, it labels “All Works © Tan Tian. This site is neither under construction nor complete”, which springs from his favorite artist, Martin Creed. Like what the label implied, Tan Tian always rephrased a sentence with the neither-nor construction to make a stand—within the rule that one person can only cast one vote among "for", "against" or "abstain", he chose to cast three votes.

Previously Tan Tian had been trying to develop a systematic way of his practices on art institutional critique. However, the rapid changes caused by the global epidemic made him turn to criticism and reflection on the current situation in another dimension.

Defined by "(Billboard, Manifesto, Joke)" as coordinate values in a three dimensional axis, each work in the exhibition contains these three attributes simultaneously, indicating Tan Tian's pursuit of form and attitude—attracting attention provocatively, making a point solemnly, and obscuring his intention humorously. His three works, the sculpture Feel Better After Throw Up NO.5 (2013), the text Aesop can’t Fables (2018) and the painting installation 202230020010/1 (2022), are completely different in materials, structure and content. However, they are conveying a unified signal, which points out the importance of resistance the universal truth and the existence of alternative perspectives.

SPURS Gallery will present “Tan Tian: (Billboard, Manifesto, Joke)” at Gallery II on July 16, 2022. This is Tan Tian’s first solo exhibition at SPURS Gallery and it will remain on view until August 21, 2022.

关于艺术家

谭天希望通过他的作品，让观众可以看到一件事物中他们期待的部分、忽略的部分与回避的部分同时发生着。他希望通过这种展示可以让观众尝试着去容忍和理解任意一件事情的复杂性，多面性和未知性。除了自己的创作之外，他还担任着一个高校教师的工作。在课堂中他不断尝试着让学生从更多的角度去看任意一个问题，并尽力阻止他们的表态。他希望他的学生可以一直保持这种状态存在于每一个他们所需要有态度的事情当中去，然后鼓励他们去欣赏同样拥有这样素质的人，尝试培养起这些人之间的默契，建立他们相互交流的平台。

Through his works, Tan Tian hopes the viewers can see the parts of things they expect, the parts they ignore, and the parts they tend to avoid all at the same time. He hopes this will push the viewers to stand and understand the complex, multi-faceted, and unknown nature of any one thing. In addition to his creative work, he also works as a college teacher. In the classroom, he constantly tries to get his students to look at any given issue from various perspectives and does his best to stop them from taking a stand. He hopes his students will remain in this state of being in every situation where they need to have an attitude. He also encourages them to appreciate people with the same qualities, to develop a tacit understanding in between, and to build a platform for them to communicate with each other.

Tan Tian (b. 1988, Beijing, China) received his BFA from Kingston University in London in 2012, his MFA from Hunter College in New York in 2019, and is now working at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
